Nobody keeps the original TV box. It's enormous, it sits in your garage for two years, and eventually it becomes a cardboard fort for the kids or ends up at the recycling center. So when moving day comes, you're left staring at a 65-inch flat screen wondering how to get it across town without cracking the panel. Here's exactly how to do it.
Why TV Packing Deserves Serious Attention
Modern flat-screen TVs — whether LCD, OLED, or QLED — are far more fragile than they look. The panel is essentially a large piece of glass with sensitive electronics bonded to the surface. A single point of pressure, a hard corner impact, or even vibration during transit can cause pixel damage, cracked screens, or worse. Unlike a scratched table, a cracked TV screen is total loss territory.
The original manufacturer box is designed specifically to cradle the screen with custom foam inserts on all four corners. Without it, your job is to replicate that protection with materials you can buy or gather before moving day.
What You'll Need
A flat-screen TV box (available at appliance stores, Home Depot, or U-Haul) — sized larger than your TV. · Bubble wrap — at least one full roll for a TV over 50 inches. · Moving blankets or thick furniture pads. · Foam corner protectors or cut foam pieces. · Packing tape — a quality tape that won't fail under weight.

Step-by-Step: Packing Your TV Without the Original Box
Start by removing any detachable components — the base stand, cables, and remote. Wrap these separately and label the bag. Next, take a photo of the back panel connections so you know how to set it up in your new home.
Place foam corner protectors on all four corners of the TV. If you don't have pre-made foam corners, cut sections from a foam mat or use folded moving blankets bunched into each corner. Then wrap the entire screen in at least two layers of bubble wrap, starting from the center and working outward.
Secure the bubble wrap with stretch wrap or tape — but never apply tape directly to the screen or the TV's back panel.
Slide the wrapped TV into the oversized flat-screen box, screen facing forward (not flat against the bottom). Fill any gaps along the sides with crumpled packing paper or additional bubble wrap to prevent the TV from shifting inside the box. Seal the box firmly with packing tape across all seams.
Always transport and store a TV upright — never lay it flat. · Write "FRAGILE — THIS SIDE UP" on all four sides of the box. · Keep the TV away from heavy boxes that could shift and press against it. · If possible, place the TV box in the moving truck last, against the truck wall, wedged securely.
