26. What to Personally Keep With You Instead of Putting on the Truck

A moving truck is not a bank vault. It's a cargo compartment that moves down a highway, gets loaded and unloaded by multiple people, and — on long-distance moves — may sit overnight at a warehouse or transfer point. Most of the time, everything arrives perfectly fine. But there's a category of items where "most of the time" isn't good enough.

Experienced movers, relocation specialists, and insurance professionals all say the same thing: certain items should never go on the truck, regardless of how reputable your mover is. Here's what to keep in your personal vehicle or carry-on during every move.

No document that cannot be easily replaced should go on the moving truck. This includes anything with your identity, medical history, or financial standing attached to it. Keep these in a dedicated folder or file box in your personal vehicle — not taped shut in a banker's box buried in the truck.
