20. Can Movers Move a Hot Tub or Above-Ground Pool?

Hot tubs and above-ground pools represent a significant investment — sometimes several thousand dollars — so it makes sense to want to take them with you when you move. The good news is that both can be relocated by professional movers. The not-so-good news: they are among the most labor-intensive items on any move, and proper preparation falls squarely on the homeowner.

A standard residential hot tub weighs between 500 and 900 pounds empty. Full of water, that number climbs well past 3,000 pounds — which is why the first and most critical step is draining it completely, ideally 24 to 48 hours before the movers arrive. Even after draining, residual water can add significant weight, so tilting the tub and using a wet vac to remove standing water from the equipment compartment is strongly recommended.

Once drained, movers use heavy-duty appliance dollies, PVC pipe rollers, and furniture straps to maneuver the tub. Getting a hot tub out of a backyard often means navigating gate openings (minimum 36 inches, ideally wider), soft turf, and deck stairs. Measure your gate width before the movers arrive. If the tub can't fit through, a crane or dismantling may be the only option.
