6. What's a 'Long Carry' Fee and How Do You Avoid Paying It?

You agreed to a moving quote, felt good about the number, and then saw "long carry fee" on your final invoice. It is one of the most common surprise charges in the industry — and one of the easiest to avoid once you know what to look for.

A long carry fee is an additional charge that kicks in when movers have to carry your belongings an unusually long distance between the truck and your front door. Most companies define a standard carry distance — typically somewhere between 50 and 75 feet. Anything beyond that threshold incurs an extra per-foot or flat-rate charge.

It exists for a legitimate reason: carrying a couch 200 feet across a parking lot takes measurably more time and labor than walking 30 feet from a truck parked at the curb. The fee compensates for that extra work. The problem is when the charge appears without being disclosed in advance.
